Amputation is one of the hardest experiences to go through, and even more difficult to formulate a life after it. For many it is an emotional, physical, and mental obstacle. There is no denying its challenge.

How do you Cope with Being an Amputee

  • Don’t spend time blaming
  • Learn New habits
  • Accept limits
  • Its ok to be angry
  • Believe in yourself

#1 Don’t blame

There are many factors that go into dealing with amputation that will hold you down from a full recovery. Blaming yourself is one of them. Especially if certain life choices landed you where you are today, do not dwell on the past. Forgive yourself and then try to move on.

#2 Learn new habits

When such a traumatic event occurs that leaves one with the scar of that experience, it usually becomes the focal point of that person’s life. One of the best ways to heal from an event like this is with the help of distraction.

How do you heal from a traumatic experience?

  • Change your lifestyle
  • Learn new things
  • Find new habits
  • Distract yourself from the past experience

When something like amputation becomes the center of one’s life, it is hard to see what the world truly has to offer. The best thing to do is to go out and find what it can offer you.

#3 Pace yourself

Part of coping with amputation is having to accept limitations. There are either going to be things that you could do before that you can’t now, or things that will need a new strategy to complete. Failure is one of the hardest things to understand, but it is also the greatest teacher. Pace yourself, remember your limits, but never be afraid to try new things.

#4 Its OK to be angry

Often times, when we hold ourselves responsible for the points we are in in our lives, we take a great deal of effort to remind ourselves each and everyday of our failures. And in hindsight, it is ok to slap yourself on the wrist. However, it is not ok to dwell.

#5 Believe in yourself

Maybe on of the hardest things to do in a situation like this is to believe in yourself. Yes; you are not happy with where you’ve ended up. No; there is nothing you can do to change what happened, but that doesn’t mean you can’t change what will happen. Everything begins with a choice, and the choice is yours.
